Commercial Motor Vehicles

STAY SAFE. LEAVE EXTRA SPACE.

Tips for Passenger Vehicle Drivers

Not all vehicles drive the same. Commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) like trucks, busses and semis are 20-30 times heavier than passenger vehicles. They take longer to stop, are harder to maneuver and have larger blind spots.

As a passenger vehicle driver, you can react to and accommodate for CMVs more easily than they can. Remember, you’ve got someplace to be – and it’s not in a truck’s blind spot.

No pass is worth a crash. Leave room for larger vehicles.

LEAVE EXTRA SPACE.

It takes longer for CMVs to adjust their speed. Leave extra space in front of trucks, and don’t follow closely. Trucks and busses need up to two football fields of distance to stop.

BUCKLE UP.

The number one thing you can do to protect yourself in case of a crash? Wear your seat belt on every trip.

PASS WITH CARE.

Drive predictably around CMVs. Pass quickly, and avoid passing from the right lane. Use your blinkers. And when you’ve finished passing, allow extra space before moving back over.

ANTICIPATE WIDE TURNS.

Be patient, and wait for CMVs to turn. Give them extra space, especially when turning right as they may need to take up both lanes.

BEWARE OF BLIND SPOTS.

Commercial motor vehicles have larger blind spots – and more of them. Don’t linger beside, behind or in front of trucks. If you can’t see their mirrors, they can’t see you.

Tips for Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers

Your most important stop is the one back home.

As a CMV operator, you’re logging millions of miles each year. But remember – for each load and every mile, there’s someone waiting for you on the other side.

Drive with care, buckle up and watch for signs of driving fatigue. After all, you’ve got someplace to be – and someone who needs you.

Stay focused and get home safely.

BUCKLE UP.

Always wear your seat belt – whether you’re driving one mile or one thousand.

DRIVE defensively.

Be aware of your blind spots and check your mirrors often for passenger vehicles. Use caution around intersections, scan your surroundings and give yourself time to react.

NEVER DRIVE IMPAIRED.

Stay clear-headed, and never drive under the influence. There’s no safe limit for alcohol or other substances.

DON’T DRIVE
DISTRACTED.

Things inside and outside of your truck can distract you. Never use your phone or dispatch device while driving, and avoid using food, drinks, maps and dashboard controls.

LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS OF FATIGUE.

Get enough sleep before driving, and watch for signs of drowsiness like heavy eyes, blurred vision, hitting rumble strips or wandering thoughts. A short 45-minute nap can be more restorative than a cup of coffee.
